E. Sterling Chamberlain III
Vice President & Senior Technologist sterling.chamberlain@wtri.com
Mr. Chamberlain, over a 24-year career in the transportation industry at New York City Transit Dept. of Buses, rose from a shop floor position in the maintenance barns to system wide maintenance management. During the final ten years of his career, he concentrated on bringing modern decision support systems and maintenance practices to maintenance operations, becoming a become a specialist in technology deployment. He developed several computerized information management systems that are still in use at New York City Surface Transit, and has also been involved in designing effective on-the-job educational programs.
In 1989, he was selected as Manager for an ambitious project to bring a state of the art maintenance management information system to New York City Transit, implementing a system that had never been truly successfully used in public transportation. Mr. Chamberlain worked closely with vendors, senior management, shop floor personnel and university researchers in a detailed effort to build a reproducible implementation model that can be used throughout industry in general.
He has published several papers in scholarly journals on his methods. He considers day-to-day shop floor operations, employee education and state-of-the-art technology as critical elements to a large-scale decision support technology implementation.
In 1997, Mr. Chamberlain was one of six selected for the National Transit Institute Fellowship Program and speaks frequently on the topic of technology implementation and worker education. As a senior technologist for WTRI, Mr. Chamberlain assists training designers in curriculum validation and develops automated process oriented performance measures for trouble shooting problems with technology implementations. He is frequently invited as a speaker at conferences and professional meetings.
