What is OpSim™ Live?
The OpSim™ Live is a ground-breaking accelerated immersive learning environment that provides strategic rehearsal, “war gaming”, and cognitive remodeling opportunities for dynamic businesses.
Why would I want an OpSim™?
Broadly speaking, OpSim™ Live is a simulation-based “immersive intervention” in which workers engage with a reality-analogous version of their business environment in a compressed time period. OpSim™ Live I provides a “safe” environment in which to rehearse strategies to address current challenges or crises (e.g., losing revenue based on significant backorders), or to anticipate future uncertainties (e.g., a potential decline in the value of your core products). By targeting dysfunctional cognitive frameworks around “business as usual”, OpSim™ Live I has shown dramatic financial turnarounds for companies on the brink of disaster. Applied at both the “high end” and “low end” of the corporate ladder, OpSim™ Live I is primarily targeted to those with mid to high levels of on-the-job expertise.
How does it work?
We start the design of an OpSim™ Live by beginning with a business “ideal” that represents a non-negotiable outcome that must be achieved. We develop a scenario of events (costs, profits, product flow) that is driven by ideal assumptions and present that as a “normative ideal”. We then develop all the materials and artifacts that support this scenario as well as competing, less functional methods, and ask the participants to actually run a company with several interacting functions, attempting to meet or exceed this ideal under a time pressure (e.g., often a “month” is 20 minutes in a manufacturing exercise). Performance outcomes are tracked with extensive feedback through multiple iterations of the exercise.
The OpSim™ Live is a dynamic, highly stressful operational simulation that compels participants to reorganize their thinking in order to meet new goals and outcomes. Because the OpSim™ Live is a rehearsal environment, it allows participants to fail in the face of immediate feedback and invent novel solutions until the goal is reached. They confront organizational failures and rehearse strategic solutions while being held accountable to non-negotiable outcomes. The “vision” and “imagination” of what’s possible in terms of organizational performance emerges from within rather than being engineered from the top.
